Clamp hub connected equipment existed before the 1st Edition of API 16A appeared. API adopted many of these older hub connectors, and failed to adopt others. Clamps that fit API Spec 16A specified hubs will also fit many of these previously existing hubs.
To assure a safe and leak tight connection, operators must make absolutely certain that they have properly identified the hubs that they intend to connect using API number designated clamps. The hubs must have identical dimensions and have the correct ring gasket installed.
